Story 1 - the Lost Smile

Kain:

Phew… to think the black army would attack us there

Phoena:

Yuni, your ice magic was such a great help. Thank you as always.

Yuni:

….I’m simply fulfilling my duty. Your gratitude is unnecessary.

Phoena:

Oh, that’s so like you, Yuni. Even so, thank you so much.

Yuni:

Pirika:

Well, let’s order our food! It’s gotten late so I’m starving!

Excuse me miiiss~!

Can I please have this mushroom stew!

Kain:

Ah, then I’ll have this country-style sausage

Innkeeper’s wife:

……

Pirika:

She just nodded without saying a word…

Miss, are you slightly annoyed at us?

Inn’s regular customer:

No no, please don’t take it to heart.

She’s always like this.

Back in the day she used to be quite jovial, however, the black army recently took the lives of her husband and son. Since then… she has forgotten how to laugh.

Phoena:

I’m so sorry to hear… I offer my condolensces

Yuni:

Forgotten how to laugh?

Do you forget how to laugh in the same way you do with memories?

Phoena:

Umm.. when misfortune befalls you, there are times where you feel unable to bring yourself to laugh.

Inn’s regular customer:

That aside, you guys are members of the Volunteer Army who’ve been taking down the black army soldiers, right?

To be able to meet you here must be some kind of fate.

Could you tell us what you’ve been up to recently?

Pirika:

Hehe, sure! In return, you’ll have to tell us which places have the best food in the area, old man!

<・・・・>

Inn’s regular customer:

I see. I’m impressed that you’ve made it here after all those perilous battles

Innkeeper’s wife:

…ng

Pirika:

Ahh! Miss has brought us the food we ordered!

… wait a minute. We didn’t order this apple pie!

Innkeeper’s wife:

Inn’s regular customer:

It’s an expression of gratitude to all of you for your efforts against the black army. The apple pies here are exquisite. Try some!

Pirika:

Thanks! Don’t mind if I do*…

(*TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: technically says I’m going to have a slice right away but the nuance felt off)

Hmm?! This is… so delicious~! It’s the bestest pie ever~♪

Yuni:

Is this steamed apple in the pie crust?

Why would one use such an inefficient method to bake such a thing?

Pirika:

Don’t think about it and try some, Yuni!

If you try a bite, you’ll have your answer!

Yuni:

.. Okay, I’ll try some.

Pirika:

… how is it? Isn’t it delicious?

Yuni:

… It reminds me of the time I tried a food known as shaved ice. I feel that same feeling-

It is a thing that I believe “delicious” describes

Phoena:

Oh Yuni. There’s a small piece of apple stuck to your mouth.

.. here you go, it’s gone now.

Pirika:

Thank you miss!

This apple pie was truly delicious!

Innkeeper’s wife:

…ng

Pirika:

..Oh, she left…

Yuni:

Do we not need to return any thanks for the feeling of “delicious” we’ve received?

Pirika:

Yup, I was just thinking the same thing.

But for you to suggest such a thing is so unusual, Yuni.

Yuni:

Was that the wrong choice of action? Then let us alter our plans

Phoena:

No! I think it’d be a lovely thing to do!

Right, Tsukamu-kun?

Options:

  • I agree, let’s do something to thank her.
  • I think it’s a great thing to make more mistakes along those lines

Yuni:

Roger. I will execute your order immediately.

Phoena:

Tsukamu-kun was only commenting on a desire to do something for her, it wasn’t an order. Let’s do something together

Pirika:

Let’s! Let’s do something to help her laugh again!

Inn’s regular customer:

That would be deeply appreciated. She hasn’t been the same since her family was taken away from her…

The other day, she was trying to leave the house with a carving knife swearing she would take revenge on the Black Army.

Pirika:

Whaaat?!

Inn’s regular customer:

We managed to stop her back then but we don’t know when she might do something rash like that again.

Even us, the regular customers, would like her to bounce back too.

Yuni:

Then… all we have to do is eliminate the magical creatures.

Pirika:

Hmm… rather than that… ooo! I’ve got something!

We, the Volunteer Army, can help her laugh by telling her our best jokes*!

(*TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: In Japan, “neta” (ネタ) can be punny or funny impressions/retelling of situations/movements)

Yuni:

Jokes? What are…

Pirika:

Even if you ask me what they are…it’s like a special ability that can make people happy!

I’d like to practice before I show her…

Kain! Do the one that would even make Yuni laugh!

Kain:

O- ohhhh

<・・・>

NOTE: the following are a series of cheery onomatopoeic gorilla sounds. I may record this later but only when my mum is out of the house so she doesn’t judge me XD

Uhho, uhho, uhhoho~I,

Uhho uhho uhho

ウッホ、ウッホ、ウッホホ~イ

ウッホウッホウッホ!

Yuni:

His arms and legs are flailing weirdly. What is he up to?

Pirika:

Umm.. I have no idea…

Kain:

Ugh, Uhho, uhho, uhhoho~i!

I’m a gorilla, uhhoho~i!

ウッホ、ウッホ、ウッホホ~イ

ゴリラだウッホホ~イ

Pirika:

Oh wow.. you’re so desperate that you explained your act?! Your impression was falling flat so you explained it?!

Kain:

Uhho, uhho, uhho

ウッホウッホうっほ

Aaaaaaaargh!!

Pirika:

That fell flat, so flat that if it was expressed as a temperature, it’d be colder than Yuni’s magic.*

(*TRANSLATION NOTE: I’ve changed it around here because if a joke falls flat, we use the expression cold joke “寒い冗談” and there wasn’t a simple way of translating that to make sense)

Yuni:

I see… so that’s what a joke is.

You just have to imitate something, right?

Pirika:

I……. think that might have been a terrible example but what do you think? Do you think you can do something like that Yuni?

If you can, try it out!

Yuni:

Is that an order? If that’s the case, I’ll see what I can do.

…..…

………

……..

Phoena:

What’s wrong Yuni? You’re standing there with your arms up, without moving even the slightest…

Yuni:

I’m imitating a tree.

Pirika:

……

I-it’s definitely a fresh idea in some ways!?

Yuni:

……

Drunk man:

Why you-...!

How dare you muck around over there making a lot of noise!

Phoena:

Oh… I’m terribly sorry.

Yuni:

….

Drunk man:

Oi you, the lady over there.

Spreading your arms over there without a hint of apology, are you making a fool of me?

Yuni:

…..

Pirika:

Y-Yuni! You can stop imitating a tree now

Drunk man:

You little shits! We’re taking this outside!

BATTLE!

Drunk man:

Mmmmmm (smacks lips)….

Pirika:

Ahh that drunk man, he fell asleep right after he challenged us

Phoena:

It seems like we caused a disturbance before.

Let’s try to keep quiet next time

Innkeeper’s wife:

…. I’m terribly sorry.

Phoena:

Don’t be concerned- ohh! It’s the innkeeper’s wife!

Pirika:

Wait, where did she go? I wonder what happened?

Inn’s regular customer:

E-everyone! It’s a disaster! The innkeeper’s wife-

She heard the magical creatures that took the lives of her husband and son were nearby so she…

-she said she had to fight back, even if it didn’t have much of an impact, before running out of the inn!

Pirika:

Whaat?!

Yuni:

Let us commence our pursuit immediately and bring her to safety.

Pirika:

Y-yes.

BATTLE!

Yuni:

Rescue target identified. Magical creatures are approaching. It’s an extremely dangerous situation

Magical creature:

Roaaaaaar

Innkeeper’s wife:

How dare you take my husband- and my child!!

I’ll show you that humans aren’t just weak presences you can harm as you please!

No matter what, I will take you down!

Magical creature:

Graaaah

Innkeeper’s wife:

Ahhh!

Yuni:

Come around, “Blue Seal”. Freezing spells, unfold!

Magical creature:

U-ughhhh

Innkeeper’s wife:

Oh, you’re the one from the Volunteer Army?!

Are you here to save me?

Kain:

That’s right. Leave this guy’s allies to us!

Innkeeper’s wife:

But… I want to be able to take one down with these hands.

Yuni:

Step back.

You have no chance of defeating this enemy.

We will take them down.

That is the most rational option.

BATTLE!

Yuni:

Freeze and disintegrate

Magical creature:

Graaaaaaaawr

Innkeeper’s wife:

The magical creatures that destroyed my family have died?

Yuni:

The target has been eliminated.

Are you hurt?

Innkeeper’s wife:

No, I’m fine... Thank you…

Phoena:

We were able to take down those magical creatures.. but it seems she still hasn’t regained her spirits.

Pirika:

Okaaay! It’s time to show her what we’ve all been practicing!

Hey, miss! We have something we want to show you

Innkeeper’s wife:

…eh?

Pirika:

Look! Kain, show her the new and improved version and make her laugh!

Kain:

S-sure! Miss!

Uhho uhho! Uhhohho~!

Uhhoho~I, uhhoho~i! uhoho!

ウッホウッホ!ウッホホ~!

ウッホホ~イ、ウッホホ~イ!ウホホ~!

Innkeeper’s wife:

…?

Pirika:

Kain! It looks she doesn’t quite follow what you’re doing!

Kain:

Uhoooo! Uho! Uho!

I-I’m a gorilla, uhho! Uhhohoi~!

ウホー!ウホッ!ウホッ!

ゴ、ゴリラだウッホッ!ウホホ~イ!

Pirika:

You explained it again?

You impression didn’t convey what you were trying to be so you’re explaining it again!

Kain:

Uhho… uhho…

Aaaaaaaargh!!

Pirika:

This… this is….! Next up is Tsukamu-kun’s will try to bring a smile to your face with all his might!

Options:

  • Spin around and bounce forward, surprising her
  • Do a backflip and shout something silly

Pirika:

He does a backflip, curls himself into a ball and shakes while shouting funny things in a happy voice but…

Innkeeper’s wife:

….

Pirika:

That completely fell flat, Tsukamu-kun!

Yuni:

……

Innkeeper’s wife:

….? What are you doing? Spreading your arms out like that?

Yuni:

I’m imitating a tree.

Innkeeper’s wife:

….

W-why?

Yuni:

.. It’s thanks for the pie.

….

Innkeeper’s wife:

By any chance, are you trying to cheer me up?

Yuni:

…..

Pirika:

T-this may have been due to all her practice!

The unwavering Yuni has…

Phoena:

That’s truly an amazing feat. She truly seems like a tree.

Yuni:

….

Innkeeper’s wife:

Oh dear, she keeps looking in this direction. What am I supposed to do?

…pfff- pffft but it’s true. I can’t keep troubling those around me

Thank you. I feel much better now.

I enjoyed your impression of a tree

Yuni:

So this is what it’s like to make someone laugh.

A similar feeling to what I felt with “delicious” is rising up within me.

Pirika:

That’s right. By making other people around you happy, it can make you happy as well!

Oh, that reminds me! You did your tree impression without anyone ordering you!

Yuni:

….that’s true.

I did that of my own …will?

……

Pirika:

Hey, Yuni.

You can stop doing that tree impression now!
